The body of the butterfly is marvelously detailed with the wings exhibiting a densely textured pattern, and strategic, decorative lines and dots throughout the design. The antennae whimsically curl and connect back to a large gold bead atop each wing. Fine spiraling cannetille work and dots of granulation flank the butterfly on each side, and serves as the terminal between the head of the ring and the plain, narrow shank. As Diana Scarisbrick states in her book “Rings: Jewels of Power, Love and Loyalty,” the mid-18th century taste for the “light, elegant and graceful” is reflected in the jewelry produced during this time, which often featured flowers, bows, colorful gems, butterflies and other insects (think giardinetti rings). During this time, there was a deep interest in naturalistic motifs and gardens, and a strong shift towards the whimsical and delicate. These tastes and motifs remain visible and persist into the early 1800s, which is also when gold-focused cannetille jewelry enjoyed pronounced popularity and desirability. Circa 1820, this ring measures a size 5.5. It is in excellent, untouched antique condition. Under magnification, there are small nibbles to some of the tiny turquoise beads. A very sweet and wearable ring. It is undoubtedly one of a kind.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Returns and exchanges are accepted within 3 days of delivery date.
