An unusually delicate, detailed and dainty pair of taupe-colored Art Deco Egyptian Revival faience scarab earrings in silver, circa 1920. This pair stands out in their smaller scale and construction simply due to the fact that Victorian era Egyptian and Archeological Revival pieces tend towards the large, bold, and grand making this pair exceptionally wearable. The textural and anatomical details of the beetles themselves are also very nicely defined and delineated by masterful carvings that make excellent use of the darker and lighter beige tones of the material. Like many similar examples, each scarab has been set like a bead, held in place by two small pins at either hole; and have been adorned with crude “hieroglyphs” to their verso. The silver settings begin with simplified cartouche panels, which then flare into a mirrored lotus flower flourish.

In very good antique condition. The post backings are replacements for the kidney wires that would have completed the original design; with this small modification evidenced by a little mark at the juncture. The ceramic bug drops are in an excellent state, with a singular tiny scuff to one bug’s thorax. The ornate silver frames holding each scarab in place have been left unpolished, to be wiped down by their new caretaker should they wish.  Each earring measures 1 inch from top to bottom, and the pair combined weigh 5.8 grams in their entirety.
