Antique Early Victorian Turquoise & Pearl Pave Butterfly Brooch with Garnet Eyes in Silver and 10k Gold circa 1800, Georgian, Bug, Insect, Pin, 1800's
A fantastic early Victorian brooch, circa 1800, modeled in the shape of a large butterfly with outstretched wings—it’s entire body studded with natural pearls and turquoise cabochons; both stones prized for their organic, naturalistic beauty. Two tiny garnets peek out as eyes from the cobbled textures and surfaces. A very weighty and substantial piece clocking in at 22 grams, and well crafted with a silver top and 10k gold backing.
Butterflies have been historically associated with the soul and psyche, rebirth and transformation; and this pin, as it is in excellent wearable antique condition, is fit to continue symbolizing these abstractions and ideals. There does appear to be a mysterious double golden bar applied to the very center of the reverse; certainly a later addition and unclear in purpose. It measures 1.5 inches in height by 1.25 inches in width, from furthest point to its furthest point.
