Circa 1900, this electrically vivid Edwardian era opal half-hoop ring flashes brightly in lime greens, hot pinks, and bright blues. The four oval cabochons are deeply placed within claw settings, set open back for maximum clarity and color; and lead into wide, unadorned shoulders and a sturdy shank. Discovered in Australia in 1849 by German geologist, Johannes Menge, opals enjoyed enormous decorative popularity and were considered a very de rigueur material by the turn of the 20th century. There are several hallmarks to the interior of the shank, one of which indicates opal's exotic and far-flung place of origin as the stamped "F" designated the use of imported materials. The rest of the sequence of hallmarks indicates the ring was produced in Chester in the year 1902, in 9k gold. "GT" is the makers mark. An electric candy, pastel sunset, almost abalone flash! In excellent antique condition. It is a size 8-8.25
