Immensely collectible, gem-set enamel mourning bands are one of the more scarce and elusive specimens of Georgian mourning jewelry.

Dated to 1767, this particular example is gorgeously, sanguinely sparkly with a raven glossy, high shine finish. Punctuating the smoothness of the hoop, and serving as the focal point of the band, is a bejeweled bezel composed of a trio of gemstones: with an oval-shaped, collet-set, bloody-berry hued foiled garnet placed  between two rose cut diamonds in silver rub-over settings.

The shank itself is wonderfully solid and rounded, crafted fully in high karat 18k gold, being of a convex design to the interior for comfort and ease of wear. To its exterior, the shank has been finely decorated with midnight black enamel and spindly golden letters spelling out the details of the deceased; a minutely scored border above and below the text circumscribes the finger ring's round form.

Mourning jewelry, especially rings, were often offered as sort of funerary "souvenir" of sorts, with many high caliber jewels given out as mementos, gifts and tokens after their expense and creation had been expressly written into, and designated by, the will of the dearly departed. With more knowledge about their creation and intent, both collectors and connoisseurs, along with more recent jewelry explorers and appreciators, are urged  consider this special, sentimental class of jewels as celebrations of life, love and remembrance instead of objects of superstition to be feared. Somber and sensuous, it is fine jewelry with character, history and undeniable psyche.

In excellent antique condition. The diamonds appear to be later additions as evidenced by the several letters that have been obscured or disappeared by them--the first name of the deceased was most likely "Joshua," though now all that remains are the three letters "hua." Otherwise immaculate.

It is a 7.5 in size and weighs 4.8 grams. The band measures 3.4mm in width. The garnet's face measures 7.4mm by 5.75mm, while each individual diamond measures 3.4mm by, approximately, 4mm.
