A substantial and large Georgian gem-set brooch; executed with a considerable central oval-shaped amethyst surmounted by a halo of alternatingly larger and smaller topaz rounds satelliting its orbit. From the bottom hang a trio of articulated teardrop pendants-- each echoing the above stone combination, and each rendering the brooch into the classic girandole form. Both this particular gemstone & color pairing, as well as the girandole design, in which three dangling pear-shaped ornaments are suspended from a central component, are echoes and call-backs to Portuguese or "Iberian" jewels from the mid 18th century. Foiled and gorgeously faceted, each gemmy component has been set closed back in deep golden cups, and in delightfully fat, little cut down collets; all in 14k gold. Dramatic, colorful opulence from the first quarter of the 19th century. In incredible antique condition, intact with the original hinge and C-clasp to the reverse. A few minor repairs to note: one topaz in the halo has been replaced with a clear paste, and one small topaz in the top portion of one of the drops has been replaced with an amethyst. There are also what appears to be remains of a once upon a time added bale, as well. Heavy, and of exquisite quality weighing in at 13.6 grams. The top amethyst and topaz halo component measures 36mm by 30mm, while the longest bottom droplet hangs at about 20mm.
