A late 18th century Georgian urn mourning ring in the form of a large, commanding oval bezel with bifurcated shoulders framing a central scene of a neo-classical urn upon a plinth built up of white, royal blue and golden enamel, most unusually set upon a background of a piece of forest green fabric or cloth. Finding pieces with this uncommon backing material always beg a few questions in my mind–might the fabric itself hold some additional significance, could it even originate from the deceased loved one’s clothes or possessions? Or was fabric simply an easy material to work with? At any rate, the rich green provides an attractive and very visually interesting backdrop to the beautifully detailed urn, with its carefully golden beaded edges, the pretty little flowers upon the plinth’s base, and the wheat sheaf-like flourishes radiating from its white vessel portion. To the verso, the ring is inscribed with the details of the deceased and dated 1788 and bears witness to many thoughtless gold tests over the centuries; with an abundance of scratches and a few dark marks across its surface.

It is important to note that this ring is missing the usual accompanying glass over the front of the bezel and, while the lack of glass gives us an exciting barrierless close up of the craftsmanship, it also leaves the delicate interior scene exposed. The enameling is in surprisingly excellent condition, however, with only one or two imperfect sections along the white border. There are difficult to notice traces of old repairs to either shoulder in the form of very small dark spots. This is a piece for someone willing to wear with a little bit more extra caution than usual, or for someone who would like to get the glass replaced. Condition reflected in pricing. A 6.5 in size.
