Antique Georgian White Enamel & Rock Crystal Coffin over Hair Mourning Ring c. 1773 in Gold, 1700's, Memorial, 18th Century, Hairwork
An untouched & pristine Georgian era mourning ring, rare in the unmarred white enamel that covers the rounded, convex shank; as well as the flawless coffin shaped crystal bezel that studs the front. Under the coffin, a stretch of tightly straight brown hair--still laying flat, prim and very orderly to this day.
The white color of the shank indicates the status of the deceased as unmarried or very young and alludes to pureness and innocence. The enamel, intact, solid and very finely done serves as the background for capital golden letters spelling out the deceased's details. There are several different flourishes in between the words of dedication on the shank, which is unusual and unique as more often than not in these examples there are typically maybe one or repeated motifs.
The upright orientation of the coffin crystal is uncommon as well, since the majority of the few rare mourning rings set with coffin crystal bezels are set longways. The craftsmanship hints at American origins, a suspicion which has been confirmed by genealogical research by its previous caretakers. A scarce and historic piece that has a sort of tranquil serenity to it; a serene and peaceful quality that softly emanates. Of superior craftsmanship, well made & modeled, and in immaculate condition. Weighing in at a solid 3.2 grams. A size 7.
