Antique Pre-Georgian Baroque Table Cut Diamond Cross Pendant in 20k High Karat Gold c. 1700, Religious, Devotional, Dutch, Flemish, 18th Century

With workmanship indicating a circa date of 1680-1700, this incredibly sumptuous pre-Georgian antique cross is not only steeped in history but, as a devotional jewel, also a very tangible material expression of culture. Crafted of super rich 20k high karat gold and five table-cut diamonds set in domed, rub over collets, this pendant is decorated with typical late Baroque flourishes such as the pie-crust edging and the notched perimeters at the base of each of the vaulted components. The diamonds have been pitch-backed for uniformity in appearance, and gleam with the most hypnotic watery, mirror flash. From the center and highest dome, four pointed termini radiate out-- each containing a tiny rose cut diamond chip, and each finely engraved to both the front and back tips. The bottom teardrop portion of the cross is an articulated dangle which hangs and moves freely with every movement. Western Europe, most likely Dutch or Flemish in origin. In pristine antique condition. It measures 1.5 inches in length and 1 inch in width, at its widest point. It weighs 4.6 grams.
