A crisp and sharp late Victorian square, diagonally set locket. It is gold filled, testing at 14k, and features a central paste starburst set into wonderful geometric pin stripping to the front. The bale and mounting are ornate and well wrought. The square shape, as well as the style of bale, both indicate that this piece was originally worn on a watch chain as a fob. It opens easily with the help of a small notch on one side, and clicks shut securely. Once open, the plain interior reveals the paste stones to be set open backed; punched through the metal of the locket's front half. The inter of its back half other side reads "W & H Co" inside of a heart indicating its manufacturer: a Wightman & Hough, jewelers from Providence, Rhode Island. Active between 1856-1922, they became well regarded and known in particular for their lockets. The locket is in excellent antique condition. The paste stones still twinkle brightly, their facets continuing to remain sharp and unchipped into modernity. The unmarred pinstripe chasing decorating the front remains creates a beautiful shimmering effect. It measures around 1 inch by 1 inch, excluding the bale.
