Antique Victorian Boulder Opal Spider with Garnet Head Brooch in 9k Rose Gold circa 1890, Bug, Insect, Pin, Three-Dimensional, Figural, 1800's
Antique Victorian Boulder Opal Spider with Garnet Head Brooch in 9k Rose Gold circa 1890, Bug, Insect, Pin, Three-Dimensional, Figural, 1800's
A psychedelic and visually entrancing bejeweled, three-dimensional Victorian take on a spider in the form of a brooch, circa 1890. Executed in the most fabulous reddish copper-colored gold in 9k, it features two small green eyes, a round garnet head, and starring an arresting oval shaped boulder opal cabochon for the thorax.
The boulder opal is absolute earth magic with iridescent rainbows oozing out of the crackling in the chocolate brown. The pin exhibits wonderful detail, from the scalloped edges of the gold framing the head and abdomen, to the thoughtful and realistic ridges and forking of the six legs.
Extremely solid & well made, it hangs playfully from a safety chain. There is evidence to the reverse of a small repair to the anchoring of the tiny chain. In excellent condition. Weighing in at 4.9 grams. It measures just shy of an inch in length, and 3/4 of an inch in width— from farthest point to point of each most outstretched leg.
