Glossy, glorious, and exceedingly well cared for over the centuries and the many exchanges of hands it has withstood to be here now with us, this extra long Victorian beaded mourning necklace is a true treasure.
It is composed of a considerable length of carefully and attractively arranged diamond-shaped beads of several sizes; polished to the maximum, and cut as sharply as can be.
It terminates in a jump ring and bolt clasp of gold tone, (a base metal in a golden color,) and also wraps in multiple layers beautifully, both on the throat and wrist.
While this chain was indeed most likely a mourning piece, the reality is that Victorians wore jet fashionably often; with records of carved jet bangles serving as such everyday jewels that they can be observed worn by beach goers in old photographs! There are so many amazing, attainable, affordable Victorian jewels not centered around precious materials that are worth preserving and passing on, and, in our humble estimation, this necklace is a great and illustrative example of this category.
In excellent condition. It has been professionally restrung, nice and tautly: upgraded both for functionality and wearability, as a new lease on use and utility is a true cornerstone in the conservation of old jewels! Some minimal and age appropriate surface wear can be observed. The closure and findings appear all original and age appropriate, (check out the matching ball shaped termini to both sides,) with the bolt clasp in perfect working order.
From tip to tip, the chain measures 46 inches. It weighs 34.8 grams.
