Antique Victorian Hand Carved Whitby Jet Mano Figa with Hammer & Cuff in Silver, 1800's, Fist, Mano Fico, Amulet, Talisman, Evil Eye, Good Luck Charm, 19th c
A rustic & folk artsy Victorian era mano figa pendant, depicted as a roughly hand-hewn fist carved of matte whitby jet, with naive tool marks quite evident across its surface. Capped in silver with a matching rough bale, and the charming detail of a perforated, pointed cuff; its curled fingers grasp a sturdy hammer, also crafted of silver. Unusual, primitive and super rad. Power to the people, to the act of creation, and the act of resistance as the mano fico hand gesture is an ancient Italian symbol historically associated with protection, the warding off of the evil eye and of fertility. It is in very good antique condition, taking into consideration its coarse and rugged style, with a few slight tarnish spots to the silver cap--with any polishing desired left up to the new caretaker. The hand measures 26mm in length, excluding the bale, and 10mm in width at its widest. The hammer measures 14mm. The pendant weighs 4.4 grams.
