No doubt created as much to decorate, as an exercise in mastery and skill, this Victorian Italian pendant, representing a charming and caricaturesque take on a fisherman's basket, has been carved and wrought of one singular piece of branched coral: The craftsman, allowing the coral's organic beauty to guide him, has left the reverse of this delicate jewel untouched, in an open, crisscrossing labyrinth of twigs and sprays; while the front has been fashioned figurally as a plump fish.
With its eyes and mouth open wide, it is representative of a fisherman's basket, boasting masterfully modelled notched straps to either side, and a bale consisting of interconnected links much like netting.
Representative of abundance, patient waiting and the sea's endless bounties, not to make mention of coral's historical talismanic associations, piece is an extremely unique good luck talisman and unusual symbol of plentitude. Circa 1870.
In excellent antique condition. Very light nibbling to one small area of the tail can be observed with magnification. Also upon very close examination, it appears as though some coral branch ends that make up the reverse may have chipped cleanly off. It weighs 3.5 grams, drops 1.25 inches in length, including the bale, and is about 1/2 an inch at its widest.
