Antique Victorian Sharks Tooth Amulet Pendant in Engraved Silver Mounting c 1880, Naturalist, Charm, Animal, Flora, Fauna, Necklace, 19th c.
An extremely cool and quite scarce Victorian era shark tooth amulet pendant, mounted in double sided engraved silver; circa 1880 and of high quality craftsmanship. Shark’s teeth have been prized as amulets for centuries by various cultures, with medieval European courts using fossilized shark teeth as a safeguard against poisonings, as they were believed to be able to detect or neutralize potentially tainted food or drink. This late 19th century example is in excellent, wearable antique condition. Slight discoloration to the top of bale that may be polished out should one wish, though of no consequence. The thin pointed tooth itself of the long dead aquatic animal has been perfectly preserved; fine serrated edges and all. There is a small horizontal line across the base of the tooth, rough to the touch but structurally of no consequence. Incredible to think of this beast swimming Victorian (and maybe even older) waters. According to a little digging, it appears to be a bull shark's tooth. It measures about 20mm at its widest point by 20mm in height, excluding the bale. It weighs 2 grams.
